Duraz-Grugnad
Quarry of the Proudstone Spangelhelm alliance
History:
Before Kazad Dawr was officialy declared complete, and the land was still being prospected, one of the clans that had joined the venture found a promising area of land that had a selection of different stratas of rock in a small area due to probable ancient volcanic activity.
In 2420, when the site for Kazad Dawr had been decided, and construction began, the Proudstone clan were granted leave of the king to build there own fortified clan guild house on the site.
By the time Kazad Dawr was finished and all its deeps carved out [2431], and King Lance declaired the Kazad a fully founded and self sufficient hold, the Proudstone clan had created a large quarry system above and bellow the ground, which were sectioned ruled by a clan elder, and called Higher Grugnad (above ground) and Lower Grugnad (bellow)
Soon, Kazad Dawr made use of its gold mines, and trade began between the less wealthy Proudstones.
Soon enough human traders came to buy dwarf made goods, and the masonry work of the Proudstone came to good use. The goblin poplution was at a low due to particularly harsh winters, and Kazad Dawr entered a period of prosperity.
Around the year 2440, the passes of the Blue mountains began to thaw out and goblin populations began to increase, with many large tribes founding in the mountains.
By 2446 the goblin raids on the quarry began to increase in intensity. Many raids on the cattle herds resulted in the deaths of many fine dwarfs, and the Proudstones began to fall back into the confines of their walls more and more.
By the time of the first seige of Kazad Dawr[2450], the Proudstone quarry was beleived to have fallen, although only a small fraction of the main hoarde had assaulted it. Regardless of the odds, the defenders of the quarry knew every inch of their lands like the back of their hands, and so the goblins payed for every inch they took. The seige on Kazad Dawr was ultimately broken at the gates to the Kings palace, and as the goblins fled, many more fell the the spitefull axes and jeering quarrels of the Proudstones.
It is worth noting, that in Khaz-Irbaz, (the bazaar) the mighty statue of Gazul and the war dead was constructed by the finest masons of the Proudstones, using Proudstone rock.
During the second seige of Kazad Dawr[2451] the now expanded complex of the quarry became overrun by vile skaven, who came from above and bellow in large numbers, very nearly swallowing the dwarfs up.
Both factions mingled in the courtyard and all order was lost as the two sides fought for supremicy. It was the sacrifice of Tharu's Miner regiment that saved the day, using demolition charges to destroy the tunnels of their foes before fighting to the last dwarf defending the last tunnel. The skaven ultimatly defeated themselves in the crush to enter the courtyard, and the Proudstone clan survived yet again.
However, after this grim day many of the clansmen had been slain, and the family was at high risk should a second assault come unto their lands.
With this in mind, the Proudstone's sent for aid from Kazad Dawr, from whom they learned the death of the King. Leading a band of Rangers seeking to avenge the grudges of the skaven, Kadrik the mad reached the quarry, and seeing their plight, he began helping them rebuild their homes. It is said that as soon as Karu Proudstone and Orodrim Spangelhelm met, they fell in love, and within a year [2452] they were married, and half of the Spangelhelm family took up abode in the quarry.
It is noted that Kadrik Spangelhelm dissapeared in 2484 and it is rumoured he played some part in the War of the Deeps.
It is also noted in the book of the Proudstones Kadrik returned on Grugni's day before the day of rememberance. [2511] Kadrik declared thane of Higher Grugnad. (for you dras)
